What is Block Printing?
Block printing is an ancient method of printing patterns on fabric using hand-carved wooden blocks. This traditional technique has been practiced for over 2,000 years and remains one of the most beloved forms of textile art in India.
The Process: Craftsmanship in Every Step
1. Carving the Wooden Blocks
Skilled artisans carve intricate motifs into teak wood or sheesham (Indian rosewood). These blocks are often passed down through generations.
2. Preparing the Fabric
The fabric, usually cotton, silk, or linen, is washed to remove starch and dried under the sun to ensure smooth dye absorption.
3. Dye Mixing
Natural or synthetic dyes are prepared in vibrant hues, often in small batches to maintain color purity.
4. Stamping the Fabric
The block is dipped in dye and carefully stamped onto the fabric with precision. Each piece is printed manually, requiring perfect alignment — especially in multi-color patterns.
